The new Nautilus Sailing Dory is the result of our work to merge all the best attributes of our other dory projects, including the larger Deblois St. Dory and the smaller Nautilus Rowing Dory, as well as our collaboration with Vivier on the Doris. This Dory is very similar to the Doris with a more refined hull shape for sail-and-oar boating and our signature process of sneaking up on the perfect building system using our trademark Tab-n-Lock System which negates any need for a building strongback and temporary molds.

Key Features:

  • Can be built from a kit as a first build

  • Stable and seaworthy; flotation makes it unsinkable

  • Versatile: row, sail, camp, daysail, picnic, etc.

This hull shape was drawn, refined and optimized to get the best hydrostatics for sailing and rowing performance, increase functional capacity for up to four adults, and take advantage of our latest success hull building method with the Tab-n-Lock system used on our Nautilus Rowing Dory, the first Dory to be built with this system -- and it couldn’t have gone better.

After our successful trials building a Doris by F. Vivier, who graciously gave Clint permission to make modifications to that design to use in our boatbuilding class, we immediately began drawing the Sailing Nautilus. We were after an interior more amenable to more than 2 adults with extra seating and the ability to row tandem. But we wanted to same incredible stability the Doris offered and excellent sailing abilities we found in hull #1.

A few ways the NRD is an improvement over its predecessor, the Doris, is a simplified interior with space for three adults, a single lug rig, a foolproof daggerboard trunk and an easy-to-build hull.

The Nautilus Rowing Dory, a smaller version of the Sailing Dory being built - you can see the custom fit sawhorses cradling the hull and the tabs coming through the planks.

Construction Photos

These photos show the construction of the Nautilus prototype in our Intro boatbuilding class - this hull was built upside down over a strongback but now we have obviated the need for any such thing with our novel Tab-n-Lock method shown in the Nautilus Rowing Dory build photo above. We will update the construction photos below once the first tab-n-lock version is built.

Currently, the Nautilus Sailing Dory is in production and development until release in 2025.
