The Calico Skiff is one of the newest boats in our fleet and came about because Clint resisted for years the temptation to design a do-it-all skiff because too often these generalized boats you find on the market are not great for any single one of the uses, but too much a compromise. Then a customer came along who loved the idea of the Points East Pram but wanted something just under 10’ and with a traditional pointed bow. He wanted a boat for his grandkids to learn boat sense, seamanship and navigation. This time, with years of designing under his belt, Clint saw how to make a motor-sail-row skiff without sacrificing performance in any one area. Plus he had recently rescued a cute little Calcio cat and given her a new home. He was inspired and in love, so to the drawing board he went.

KEY FEATURES

  • easy to manage on land and cartoppable due to its lightweight (80 lbs for a rowing version)

  • super versatile uses for motoring, sailing or rowing

  • easy to build by a novice who has never built a boat

The Calico Skiff is a fantastic and beautiful all around boat. Motor, sail, or row it will deiiver.

The Calco is designed with safety in mind. It has great initial stability making her easy to get into and out of and the hull has built-in flotation in the bow and stern to make her self-rescuable in the case of a capsize. The boat can be rowed from the middle or bow position. If sailing, a small lugsail steps just aft of the forward seat and a small daggerboard and rudder is installed.

The Calico Skiff can be ordered and built without a sail rig and used for motoring and rowing.

She is built from 6mm Okoume plywood and is trimmed with both hardwoods and softwoods. The kit uses our novel Tab-n-Lock System to make hull assembly a snap. With a well laid out building manual and set of plans that are easy to read, anyone can build a Calico Skiff.

The prototype of the Calico Skiff was built on Great Diamond Island in Casco Bay where it will be put into service for motoring, sailing and rowing!

The Calico Skiff design came about because I wanted a pointy-bow version of the Points East Pram - my grand children will love this boat!

The Calico Skiff can be built from our complete kit in 100-200 hours by a beginner using our detailed plans and instruction manual.

I have greatly enjoyed the process building this skiff—learning a ton along the way. Once completed, I plan on building another Chase boat— this one involving more “planking”!
