The CI-16 inside the hull of an 18.

It took a village! The new Calendar Islands 18 started with the successful hull model of the CIY-16, a group of loyal crowdfunders, and the involvement of a key collaborator, David Cockey, a former head engineer for GM and small craft designer. Starting with the lines of an enlarged CIY16 hull, we began sculpting the lines of the 18 and sketching an interior and rig. Over two dozen versions later, we had what was a fair, beautiful hull model. Thanks to the “gang of four” early supporters who helped fund the design work and ordered the first kits.

Key Features

  • Roomy! This is a big boat that can fit 4-6 people

  • Not only fast, but an able camp-cruiser

  • Available in two rigs, ketch or yawl

The interior of the CI-18 is an open, comfortable, and inviting space. The side benches are wide, Cedar floorboards are comfy under the feet, and there is space for crew to lounge up forward. Don’t let that make you think this is a lazy man’s boat. With a nice run aft, she will certainly scoot with a following seabreeze and provide some fun sailing. With an easily reefed lug rig, the 18 will feel stable and comfortable when it breezes up. The wide, wrap around seating, provides plenty of space for skipper and crew. This interior may be the only ketch-rigged small boat on the market that allows the skipper to sit aft of the mizzen next to the tiller - with crew forward - rather than awkwardly reach around the mizzen to hold the tiller. The CI-18 skipper will have their own space and the family can stay up forward and have their own space to stretch out! The Yawl is recommended for those who wish to do more camp-cruising, but mostly the decision is one of personal preference. The Yawl offers the most sail area and the ketch has a slightly smaller sail area divided between two sails, making her a little easier to manage for families. The CI-18 can also take a 2-3 hp motor on her transom, very handy for anyone!

She’s stable under sail and while moving around in her. Unlike my old boat, she won’t try to throw you off if you let go of the tiller while underway. My previous boat required all my attention when sailing her; the CI-18 is much less demanding.

Complete kit contents for the Calendar Islands 18

plywood kit | timber kit | hardware kit | epoxy kit

Construction is glued-lapstrake plywood (9mm Okoume) planking over frames and bulkheads also precut in the kit. The bottom and garboard are quasi-“stitch-and-glue” style - glassed over to create a solid, abrasion resistant surface for beaching. A complete epoxy kit provides all the adhesives and fiberglass to get the job done. The interior takes 6mm ply tanktops, 9mm ply seating, and cedar floorboards. Gunwales, outer stem, and interior trim are select hardwoods. A complete hardware kit provides all the fasteners, fittings and rigging needed.
