The fearless Frosty" is our iddy-bittiest boat kit in the collection. It is a perfect small project for parents or teachers to take on with their kids and adults around New England actively build and sail their Frosties, as well. It is not only for kids! The two most active fleets are an adult Fleet #9 in Portsmouth, NH and a fleet used primarily by youth in Portland, Maine (SailMaine).

KEY FEATURES

  • proven, one-design sailboat with a nice community of people to join

  • doesn’t take up any space: stores on its stern vertically

  • super easy to build by a novice who has never built a boat; we often use the Frosty in our introductory classes

The Frosty is a wonderful sail trainer because it teaches kids boat sense in a way few boats can, because of its size and accessibility.
— Phin Sprague, Cape Elizabeth, Maine

In Portland, Maine, Frosties have been used for 20 years as trainers for their 7-8 year old participants.

Adults sail and race Frosties! Fleet #9 is in Portsmouth, NH and is very actively racing and having fun.

Complete kit contents for the Frosty kit

CNC cut Plywood | Precut Timber | Hardware | Epoxy

The Frosty kit comes with all the wood precut as well as the epoxy, hardware, rigging and the sail.

The build starts by assembling the hull panels using the stitch-and-glue method, which utilizes small wires to hold the edges of the plytwood pieces together until the glue cures. The decks go on next and the mast is fit to the boat along with rigging and sails. The boat can be painted however people want it to look. We suggest a fun and wild paint job using oil based paint from the hardware store.

Options, Upgrades and Accessories for the Frosty kit

CONSTRUCTION PHOTOS

Construction of a Frosty can be completed in a weeks time with 2 people working. This assumes a very basic paint job. We use the Frosty in our 3-day and plan to use it in a 1 week class. This is one of the few boats in our catalog that is pure stitch and glue construction. SInmple but a bit messy; we suggest working cleanly to keep epoxy and fiberlass off hands and tools.

For the first time ever, truly anybody can build their own Frosty with one of these kits making it quick and easy. It’s easier than ever for teachers, parents and community members to start their own fleet of Fearless Frosties and start racing.
